I used to run a BuddyPress site years ago and switched to phpFox. For serious community building, phpFox just feels more robust out of the box. BP is okay if you're already on WordPress but phpFox is purpose-built.

Depends what you need. phpFox has way more features and a better mobile experience without all the extra plugins you'd need for BP. But yeah, it's not free like BP can be initially.
